Well, we made it to Jonesboro on Thursday. In true form, never sitting down for a second, I worked in my parents' yard, put out six new planters of plants on the back porch, replanted two urns on the front, hung a new painting I picked up for them a couple of weeks back, cooked dinner for 10 people on Friday, and made a floral arrangement for my mother's dining room table, then raised the chandelier to accommodate its size. I should have taken a picture of it. It's one of my better works.
Saturday afternoon we donned our clam shells and headed to my brother's house for my niece's 4th Birthday, Mermaid theme and all. She received barbies, games, a scooter, a new bike, and all sorts of other things. She had a blast, and Ben slept through most of it.
About 15 minutes after we left my parent's house, my dad called to tell us Jonesboro was under a tornado warning. We debated turning back to their house, and then decided since we were all the way across town and about to leave town, we would pull in St. Bernard's Village (previous home of my grandfather, who is actually moving back there June 1) and just go in and sit while the storm passed. We know lots of the residents and workers there and new they wouldn't mind our joining them for a bit. When the storm looked like it was headed right for us and the nurses went door to door making the residents go into the bathrooms in their apartments, we decided to bunker down in one of the kitchens off a family room.
Completely panic-stricken, Jenny made me run out to the car (in the HAIL, might I add) and retrieve the Lab and the Beagle. They came in without having to ask twice, and waited with us. When the skies lightened and the rain slacked, we were on our way.
Again, not the smartest move, but we didn't know that at the moment. And plus, it was Saturday evening and I had to work Sunday...
What seemed to be fairing weather began to worsen as, halfway home, we exited the small highway and got back onto the freeway heading for Little Rock.
Somewhere about 5 miles northeast of Bald Knob, we became very much aware of the changing skies and the nearing lightening. About the same time, the radio informed us that there was a tornado spotted and if you were in Bald Knob you were in its path. So, accellerating rapidly, we made it to the Bald Knob exit and went for the only shelter we knew...McDonald's. The employees had closed to customers but let us in to weather the storm. The franchise owner called in periodically to check in with the manager on duty, and we were all told that if the sirens went off, we were to take cover.
At this point, we were told that we could not bring the dogs inside. I thought Jenny was going to have a stroke at any moment. When the sirens did in fact go off and the wind picked up, we all headed into the men's room. It was a hoot...the entire crew of the Bald Knob McDonalds...with an average age of 16-17 years, Jenny, Benjamin, and myself on the floor of the bathroom riding out the storm. The kids were taking pictures with their phones and texting their adventure all the while Jenny frantically worried about the baby and the dogs.
I was prepared, if I heard the tell-tale roar, to sacrifice it all and run for the dogs. I had backed as close to the door as possible so that I could open the rear hatch and let the dogs come inside with us.
Thankfully, the tornado passed over us and headed on its northeasterly path. When we returned to the car, we had to let down the barrier in the back so that Bailey could travel the rest of the way home with his head resting on Jenny's shoulder, while Jenny sat in the back seat with Benjamin.
Annabelle, terrified as always, made her way to Jenny's feet in the back seat, allowing me to drive the remaining 60 miles with my right hand resting on her and patting her gently.
Mother's Day, after all of that, was terribly uneventful.
Jenny only wanted cash to spend at the Scrapbooking store, so that's what she got. I let her sleep in this morning, we went to Macaroni Grill for lunch, she napped this afternoon, then we had dinner at her aunt's with all of her mom's family this evening.
After that lengthy account of the past few days, here are some pictures which should speak for themselves. (I'll comment anyway, of course).
